Collins Rig & Colt 45
A lover of the Old West will appreciate this very desirable antique JS Collins Rig & Colt 45. This well marked Collins belt and holster rig are in overall fine condition and is a desirable and highly collectable JS Collins rig. This outfit comes with a Colt Single Action .45 caliber with a 4-3/4″ barrel (two-line barrel address), serial #161703. The revolver is nickel plated with hard rubber stocks. According to the Colt Archive Department (letter included), “the individual shipping record for it was evidently lost or destroyed many years ago, the records do indicate that it was manufactured circa 1895“.
JS Collins Rig Condition
Both belt and holster are in overall fine condition, both showing the makers mark “J. S. Collins & Co, Cheyenne, WYO.” The leather on both pieces is supple and shows no damage or losses. The MONEY BELT is 3 ¼” wide x 39” long with 36 cartridge loops for .45 caliber bullets. The tongue shows a nice sharp maker’s mark and the buckle chape is stamped “45“. All the belt stitching is intact showing some re-stitching at the top seam and the tongue has been period re-located. The matching double loop holster has the same makers mark and the original “Cheyenne” style toe plug. The holster is stamped “394 4 ¾” on the back. The holster stitching is all original and solid.
Colt .45 Condition
The overall condition is very good, showing approximately 50% of the original nickel finish. The nickel plate was either factory or dealer applied as it shows no indication of buffing or polishing and all the markings are sharp and clear. Also, there is some fine to medium pitting on surfaces where the nickel has flaked off. All the parts on the gun are original except the cylinder base pin. It is an old period replacement. The rubber grips are numbered to the gun and fit perfectly. They are in good condition, showing normal wear and a small gouge on the left grip. All the numbers match and all the markings are correct and readable. Mechanics are good, the bore very good and the front sight is its original (unfiled) height. An authentic late model black powder gun with a black powder frame.
A great Western outfit that, ironically, I found last year at a gun show in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
