Antique Hand Guns / Revolvers

Colt Single Action Army – Made in 1883

This is a great example of an Old West Cowboy Colt SAA Outfit .

This Colt Single Action Army revolver (serial #96356) was delivered to Simmons Hardware Co., St Louis, Mo. On August 15, 1883, per factory letter – included. Finish listed as blue with barrel length and stocks not listed, however, 7 ½” barrels were considered standard, as this one was. The nickel plating and ivory grips may have been applied by Simmons Hardware or later by the Colt factory as the trigger guard shows the six point star indicating return to the factory for repairs/changes. At any rate, the nickel and ivory appear to have been on this Colt SAA revolver for all of its life.

This Cowboy Colt SAA Oufit has seen plenty of use and carry. Only about 10% of the original nickel is present, mostly on the barrel and ejector rod housing. The rest of the gun has turned to a dark patina. All the parts, including the screws, appear to be original to the gun. All serial numbers match, including the cylinder, stamped “356” on the back face. The barrel has been shortened to 5 ¼” and the front sight not refitted. The ivory grips fit well, showing losses at the backstrap on both sides. The bore and mechanics are good, the hammer notches have been rebuilt and the action tuned up. The hammer appears to be original as it is the correct configuration with matching wear, but some “funky” color added to it when repaired. It still looks fine and matches the look of the gun.

The holster and belt show the same use and condition and the entire outfit appears to have always been together. The double loop holster shows nice tooling and rolled border stamping with nickel spots added. The original Cheyenne pattern toe plug is present with a drain hole in it. The holster has re-sewing and rawhide lacing added at the top of the pouch where it was cut down at the trigger guard area. The upper edge shows a sewing line that is fragile and starting to separate. Both original holster loops have been re-attached with more recent style rivets.

The MONEY BELT shows the same wear and period repairs. The belt is 3 ½” wide x 35” long with 37, .45 caliber cartridge loops. The belt shows its original stitching except for the cartridge loops that are hand re-sewn through the money belt. The tongue and buckle chapes appear to be old replacements, riveted in place with antique steel rivets. The old roller buckle shows pitting and oxidation. Neither belt nor holster shows any markings as to maker. Both are still supple with only the belt showing some surface crazing. They do not appear to have been oiled.

This is a good looking outfit that shows great character from the early days of the wild west.

Note: .45 caliber bullets in photos not included.
