Colt 1860 Richards Conversion
Circa 1875
This Colt 1860 Richards Conversion is a great looking gun, in great condition, showing beautiful period ivory grips and little use since its re-finish.
Condition
This Richards Conversion is a “Type II”, or second model, serial 195142. It shows a heavy nickel plating with gold wash accents on the hammer, trigger, wedge, ejector head, and screws. Nickel and Gold washed parts were a common ornamentation in the 1880’s and 90’s. All these Type II revolvers left the Colt factory with a blue/case colored finish. Many were plated and decorated, when new, by the dealers. Some were later, after market plated by individuals.
The gun shows little use after its upgrades. It shows about 98%+ of the nickel finish, most of the wear at the muzzle. The hammer and trigger also show about 98% of the gold wash, with the screws and other small parts thinning. All the markings are sharp and clear with the exception of the numbers on the barrel assembly showing buffing. Although, still legible. There is a large “U.S.” on the right side of the frame that was mostly buffed off before plating. The full cylinder scene is visible, somewhat filled with the nickel plate. The wedge shows a matching serial number, but was stamped in a larger font. All the serial numbers match in all the correct places. The action is good, the cylinder locks up tight, and the bore shows strong rifling with typical black powder erosion.
The one-piece ivory grips were also a desirable upgrade. The grips fit well, showing shrinkage and typical age induced cracklature at the bottom.
