S.C. Gallup Rig

A great piece of antique gun leather is our S.C. Gallup Rig

A matched set of S.C. Gallup holster and belt. The rig dates to the 1880’s, both pieces maker marked “S. C. Gallup Sadl. Co., Pueblo”.

The Holster

The holster shows period modifications with added leather to the skirt and stitching on the pouch to fit a Colt 1877 Double Action revolver with a 6” barrel. Two rings have been added to the holster that appear to have held a shoulder strap, now gone, to help carry the loaded weight of the rig. Or merely used as a shoulder strap when not using the belt.

The Belt

The belt is a rifle cartridge belt 40” long x 2 ¾” wide. The belt has adjustable cartridge loops and is adjusted to fit 30-30 caliber bullets. However, .38 Colt or .41 Colt cartridges will also fit into the upper row of cartridge loops. It has a large heavy roller buckle that appears to be tin plated.

History

Samuel Caldwell Gallup learned the saddlery craft in his older brother Francis’s firm, Gallup & Gallatin Saddlery. With the help of his brother’s business partner, Edward L. Gallatin, S.C. Gallup opened his own business in 1869 in Pueblo Colorado. The saddlery operated firms in Dodge City, Kansas from 1878 to 1880 and in Durango, Colorado from around 1881 to 1884. In 1892 S. C. Gallup formed the S. C. Gallup and Frazier Saddlery with Robert Thompson Frazier, which lasted until 1898. In 1904, S. C. Gallup died. The firm was then run by Judith Gallup from 1905 to 1911, followed by James Wimmer from 1912 – 1921. The S. C. Gallup & Co. Saddlery was closed between 1921 and 1924.

It is a unique rig, in very good condition, showing some missing stitching in the holster, as well as some added stitching and polish to the belt.
