41 Short Center Fire Ammo
Winchester Brand
Circa 1885
This is an unusual box of 41 short center fire ammo in the fact that “COLT’S” is featured so prominently on the top label. It’s a Winchester brand, black powder box, circa 1885.
Condition
The box is in very good solid condition, OPENED, with all the labels approximately 90% intact. Although, the box shows soiling, all the printing on the labels is good and legible. The top green label is very good, just a little dirty. The yellow side labels are the same, as well as the guarantee on the bottom. The guarantee label on the bottom is the smallest I have ever encountered on a Winchester box.
Cartridges
All the original cartridges are in very good uncleaned condition. Even though the box is marked “Rifle Cartridges”, the ammo is for Colt’s early D. A. revolvers. Sales of pistol cartridges were banned or taxed in some Eastern Cities and this label marking was Winchester’s way of out-smarting the anti-gun factions of that era.
A very unique, and seldom encountered, Winchester box, for Colt’s 1877 Thunderer D. A. revolver.
Covered in plastic wrap for protection.
