Spotted Rig for Colt SAA

This is a fabulous Spotted Rig for Colt SAA from the early turn of the century, black in color with nickel plated spots. The large single loop holster is for a Colt Single Action revolver with a 4 ¾” barrel.

There are no maker markings on the holster or belt. However, the holster has a brass label on the lower skirt, stamped “MGM Studio Property, Culver City, Cal.” This is the fanciest spotted rig I have ever come across in over 50 years of collecting.

Spotted Rig Condition

The holster is a left-handed holster, typically worn on the right side with the gun butt forward. The holster pouch is sewn with rawhide lace and is fully intact. The belt is 3 ½” wide x 36” long. Both pieces are profusely spotted with no loss of spots. Both are in excellent used condition. Also showing no losses or damage to the leather. The tongue does show some hard use and cracking, but fully intact.

These original antique rigs are what the movie industry used in their early beginnings. Later, around the 1950’s, they started making and using their own design of cowboy gun leather, hence the “buscadero” rig.

This is a one-of-a-kind rig, beautifully made, and may be spotted (no pun intended) in some old MGM Cowboy Movies.
