US 45 Colt Ammo
Dated March 1874
A very early Frankford Arsenal box of US 45 Colt Ammo. These early Benet-primed “Colts Revolver, Cal; .45” (pre-Schofield) packets of 12 were month dated from Oct. 1873 to Aug. 1874 only.
This box is un-opened and in excellent condition showing a water proof coating of varnish.
The cartridges appear to be rimfire, but actually have an internal center fire primer. They were not reloadable. Thereafter, the .45 “Revolver Ball” cartridges, which were shorter and less powerful, were used to accommodate use in the S&W Schofield as well as the Colt SAA. They were year dated only, up to 1882. These “shorter” cartridges show a typical center fire primer.
These early Frankford Arsenal .45 Colt boxes are always in high demand and are getting harder to find. This is a great box, in great condition, and would display nicely with a Colt Cavalry Single Action in similar condition.
Covered with plastic wrap for protection.
