US Cavalry Scouts Rig
Circa 1885
A very good overall condition US Cavalry Scouts Rig, consisting of a Mills woven Prairie Belt and a catalog holster for a 7 ½” revolver. A nice Indian Scouts rig like this is rarely found in this condition.
Holster – Condition
THE HOLSTER is a double loop, ¾” skirt, catalog holster for a Colt SAA with a 7 ½” barrel. A colt 1878 D.A. will fit as well. It is also in very good condition showing a nice rolled border tooling on the holster and skirt. The top of the holster throat has been trimmed down a little to expose more of the gun. All the original stitching is present and solid and the leather supple with no damage.
Belt – Condition
THE BELT is a Mills Cavalry Prairie Belt with the 1885 Stuart-Type saber attachment. This was the first cavalry belt to use Mills woven belt body and loops. The belt is 38” long overall x 3” wide, showing a period shortening to 44 loops and a period replaced Buckle and Chape. The tongue has been shortened to 8 ½”, which removed the “Rock Island Arsenal” marking on the end. The saber attachment has been cut off and “AS” is inked on the back side. The belt is tan in color, the leather billets black/brown. It is in overall very good condition with no damage or losses. The 44 cartridge loops present show little-to-no wear and no stains. This type of belt is illustrated in “American Military and Naval Belts, 1812-1902” by R. Stephen Dorsey, page 268.
A nice rig that was most likely worn and used by an Indian Scout employed in the service of the U.S. Cavalry.
**Colt SAA in photos is not included.
