Winchester 1866 Ranch Rifle
.44 Henry R.F.
Mfg in 1872
This Winchester 1866 Ranch Rifle was just recently found in Prescott, Arizona, coming from an old rancher’s family. The rifle was used on the ranch until ammo was no longer available, about a 100 years ago, and it was put away in the attic. Its’ serial number 88921, made in 1872, and still in its original rimfire configuration.
Winchester 1866 Rifle Condition
The rifle is in very good untouched condition, showing honest period use. The octagon barrel and magazine show a mottled gray patina with just traces of blue. The loading gate shows more blue with a small amount of rust pitting. The brass frame shows a nice light smooth patina with no staining, showing minor scratches and abrasions from use. Also, there are traces of case color on the hammer and lever.
The wood is very good with normal scratches and dings from use. More so on the fore end, but no losses. It has special order sling swivels and a period sling. The upper tang has a Lyman’s tang sight that was available from Winchester and may also be a special-order. The butt stock has matching numbers under the upper tang. The butt plate has matching numbers as well. The trap door in the butt plate is broken off and the cleaning rods missing. The mechanics are good, action crisp, and a very good bore – shiny and bright with no pitting.
This is a great rifle, fresh-out-of-the-attic from a Prescott pioneer family, untouched and not “messed” with.
