Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistol

By New Haven Arms

This is a beautiful lever action Volcanic No.1 pocket pistol by New Haven Arms.

It’s a .31 caliber (for “rocket ball” ammunition) and has a 3 ½” barrel.

Pocket Pistol Condition

This pistol is in overall excellent condition. The unfinished brass frame shows a beautiful light patina with no dents, scratches, or wear. The barrel has all of its muted blue finish with the lever and hammer a silvered case color. The rosewood grips are excellent with about 95% of the original varnish remaining. The bottom of both grips show a small amount of wear on the high edges.

The bore is very good, with strong rifling, showing black powder use and light erosion, but no pitting. The action works perfectly and all the screw slots are good. The estimated quantity of the No.1 Pistol was only 850, between 1857 and 1860.

Serial number 426, indicating an early production gun, is located on the frame, under the left grip. The serial number is also on the inside of both grips. The barrel is marked “New Haven Conn. Patent Feb 14 1854”.

This is a stunning untouched example of Oliver Winchester’s first lever action guns as well as the only pistols he ever manufactured. A rare find, and would be hard to improve upon.
